Above you may view the scans for this WWI era War merit cross 3rd class from the city state of Bayern. It appears to be a quite heavily tarnished silver cross, but you may know better. In WWI there were still a number of cities who maintained therir independant armies, (a throwback to the Bismarck period of the 19th century). Bayern was one of these, as was Wuttenburg, and others. They maintained their city crest on their local regimental uniforms in much the same manner as the British had city or county based regiments such a the manchester or the Devonshire Regiments. This medal is representative of that period. A rare collectible, now 100 years old.
